A Life On Purpose

Intro

Purpose is the reason you’re here, but it is not a singular calling to find outside of yourself. Your purpose is to live as closely as you can to who you authentically are and how you choose to serve, right now. Across philosophies and religions, the message is consistent. In Hinduism and Buddhism, 'dharma' is living true to your nature and through that supporting the wellbeing of the whole. Taoism points to aligning with your nature so life feels less forced, the way your inner compass already points if you pay attention. Aristotle taught that everything has a 'telos' and that humans flourish by living their virtues, not by chasing pleasure.

This tool helps you define what purpose means to you, stay off autopilot, and imagine the future you want to help build.

Instructions

  1. What does purpose mean to you?Write a definition in your own words. If you get stuck, simply write the thoughts or questions that come to mind.
  2. What does living on purpose look like for you right now?Reflect on what’s most important in this upcoming stage of your life. Examples: explore a curiosity I’ve been avoiding, do more of a craft I love, mentor once, say no to what isn’t the right timing.
  3. How will you help yourself stay off autopilot?List ways you can be proactive and avoid certain obstacles or distractions, such as starting a morning journaling habit, adding a screen timer, setting up a friend check-in on fridays, etc.
  4. What does a world on purpose look like to you?Describe a world where most people are living on purpose, any thoughts or feelings that come up as you do, and any ways you feel called to help create this future.
