Coaching Others

Intro

Coaching is a mindset that improves every relationship. Most people don’t want to be fixed; they want to feel safe, heard, and believed in so they can find their own answers. When you slow down, listen fully, and ask short open questions before giving advice, you show respect for their agency and deepen trust. This approach reduces pressure on you, too. You become a true thought partner for the people you love, someone that helps them think clearly and choose a next step that feels right.

Instructions

  1. Who do you want to support as a thought partner?List the people in your life that you want to be there for. Then, pick one person that you can focus on supporting next.
  2. How would leading with questions change the conversation?Describe how you can show curiosity. Note a few open-ended questions you might ask and how that might feel for them.
  3. What might pull you into giving advice or getting distracted?Next to each answer, write one counter-move to use (such as ask one question first, repeat what you’re hearing, pause 3 seconds, put phone face down, confirm what they want).
  4. How will you bring this coaching attitude into your relationships?Write one simple commitment to yourself, in as much detail as you can, plus a short reminder phrase you’ll use.
